Recently, the Chinese company Xiaomi joined the ranks of self balancing scooter makers. Their newly introduced Ninebot personal mobility device offers consumers a first step into the world of self balancing two wheel vehicles.

Features

The Xiaomi Ninebot self balancing scooter offers a small, personal version of the famous Segway people transporter. This small, self-balancing device offers consumers the chance to own a piece of state of the art technology without breaking the bank.

The Ninebot weighs 28 pounds and operates via two motors powered by a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. Recharging time takes 3-4 hours, and the device will travel about 14-18 miles on a full charge. Maximum travel speed is around 10 mph on level, smooth terrain, and is provided by double wheel motors with a total of 2100 W of power. Traveling uphill will slow your speed, but the Ninebot will easily handle inclines of up to 15 degrees.

The Ninebot has a strong frame made of aircraft grade magnesium alloy, which is stronger than the more popular aluminum alloy that most companies use. The wide deck features two rubberized, non-slip foot pads to keep a rider securely on board.

Steering and direction are controlled by shifting body weight while resting your knees against the comfort padded knee grips which are located at the top of a fixed height stem. Other, similar devices feature adjustable height knee grips. This would be a great addition to the Xiaomi Ninebot, as the knee steering bar is very low by American standards. Considering that the machine is manufactured in China and was first marketed to Asians, that makes sense.

The Xiaomi company seems to take safety very seriously. The instruction manual advises riders to wear not only a helmet, but also knee, elbow, and wrist protection. Additionally, they suggest all riders what a series of instructional and safety videos before attempting to use the Ninebot. The device is recommended for adult riders and will accommodate riders up to 250 pounds.

Awesome Ride!

Overall, this is a very good example of a self balancing, personal mobility device. While there are a few things that could be improved to make it more comfortable for the rider, the Xiaomi Ninebot offers a good product to consumers. The frame and wheels are very durable, the UL battery is safe and quickly recharges. The speed and range are better than other similar devices on the market. One thing that makes the Ninebot appealing is the lightweight frame and portability of it. You can easily toss it into the trunk of your car or carry it up the stairs to your apartment. The optional Smartphone app makes it easy to check battery usage, speed, and other device data. We would highly recommend the Xiaomi Ninebot.
