Description and Review
Personal transport devices are becoming more and more common as technology progresses. The problem is that nobody has figured out how to house this technology in the best way. For that reason, there’s a host of scooters, mopeds, segways and bicycles that offer roughly the same service, in a different package. The latest human-powered transport device to be given the electric treatment is the humble skateboard. Pure Energy’s electric long board is a commuter vehicle for those who are tired of sitting in traffic; an activity the average American spends 90 hours a year doing. It’s nippy, well-balanced and has a unique control system, here’s the low down.
Features
For all intents and purposes, Pure Energy’s product looks like a regular skateboard. A long wooden deck sits on a pair of chunky heavy duty wheels. It’s when you flip the product that it reveals its true nature. A large, lithium powered battery and motor sit on the under-side which is operated by a hand-held controlling device. The engine parts are all coated in a slick matt black finish that makes it more commuter’s device than child’s toy.
When it comes to choosing an electric powered transport device the first thing people want to know is the speed. The 1200W motor takes you up to a white-knuckle 21mph although, it should be said, reaching that speed depends on the weight of the rider- a 160llb rider, for example, will only get a top speed of 18mph. It carries a maximum of 220llbs and you can ride it for around 20 miles on a single charge. Once it runs out, you simply plug into the wall to recharge for a couple of hours.
The performance is impressive given that this is an affordable product. It can be a little tricky to get the hang of for those who don’t have experience skateboarding. Pure Energy have installed two separate rider modes to help you learn although certain aspects, such as the large hand-held controller, could have been designed a little bit better. The other issue of course is the low ground clearance which makes tough terrain difficult to navigate.
Batteries don’t last forever so being able to get around on a model like this is important when they do run out. What sets the Pure Energy apart is its incredibly light-weight frame. This product weighs just 21llbs, so you can easily sling it under your arm or in the boot of your car. The USB port, for charging your phone, is a useful extra that ensures you won’t regret taking this board out with you. Overall, it’s a very well-made product that has enough power for recreational rides and enough functionality to commute with.

Strengths
- The performance is particularly impressive on a model at this price. Very fast with good stamina for longer distance commuting
- It’s a light-weight, self-contained unit so running out of juice on the go is much less of a problem
- A few useful extras such as the training wheels mode and the USB port help this product to stand out against the competition
- Seems to be built well although, being a relatively new product, it does lack user reviews to confirm this
- The customer service team are excellent
Weaknesses
- Low ground clearance really affects the overall versatility of this product by limiting you to smooth roads
- The top-speed is dependent on the weight of the rider and it struggles to take you up inclines
- Can be a little tough to find your balance when you’re first starting out
